Në një ceremoni në Porto Cervo dje në mbrëmje, zyrtarët vendorë e emëruan zyrtarisht sheshin e qytetit në nder të Mawlana Shah Karim. Një skulpturë përkujtimore u zbulua gjithashtu për të njohur punën e tij pioniere për të zhvilluar zonën përreth në Sardenjë në një rajon bregdetar të lulëzuar.
Mawlana Hazar Imam ishte i pranishëm së bashku me Princin Amyn dhe Princat Irfan dhe Sinan. Në fjalën e tij, të cilën e mbajti pjesërisht në italisht, Hazar Imam falënderoi zyrtarët vendorë për nderimin pas vdekjes që iu bë babait të tij.
“Piza është një vend takimi, kujtimi dhe komuniteti,” tha ai. “Të lidhësh emrin e babait tim me këtë vendos kujtimin e tij brenda Porto Cervo – midis njerëzve, arkitekturës, peizazhit dhe detit që ai e donte aq shumë. Unë dhe familja ime jemi thellësisht mirënjohës për këtë homazh prekës.”
Kur i ndjeri Imami vizitoi për herë të parë në fillim të viteve 1960, rajoni i Monti di Mola në Sardenjë ishte një peizazh i shkretë pa rrugë apo energji elektrike. Me mbështetjen dhe udhëzimin e tij, ajo u transformua në La Costa Smeralda — Bregu i Smeraldit — duke përdorur materiale lokale, duke ruajtur trashëgiminë e saj natyrore.
Projekti, shpjegoi Hazar Imam, “i lejoi atij të bashkonte shumë nga gjërat për të cilat interesohej thellësisht: arkitekturën, artizanatin, peizazhin, bukurinë dhe zhvillimin afatgjatë”.
Kryetari i Bashkisë së Arzachenës, Roberto Ragnedda, kujtoi vizitën e parë të ndjerit Imam në rajon dhe promovimin e tij të një qasjeje arkitekturore të projektuar për t’u përshtatur me peizazhin në vend që ta dominonte atë.
“Princi Karim,” tha ai, “filloi ta donte atë dhe të shihte një të ardhme të begatë dhe të qëndrueshme për këtë cep të tokës — një të ardhme shumë larg fabrikave, industrisë dhe shfrytëzimit të lëndëve të para. [Ai] kishte largpamësinë për të kuptuar se identiteti lokal dhe trashëgimia natyrore mund të bëheshin themelet e zhvillimit të përbashkët”.
“Emërtimi i këtij sheshi dhe zbulimi i skulpturës përkujtimore janë, pra, akte mirënjohjeje të sinqertë”. Vepra e artit, shtoi ai, “pasqyron filozofinë e Themeluesit. Ajo nuk imponohet në një kuptim monumental, por përkundrazi bisedon me vendin”.
Kryebashkiaku Ragnedda njoftoi gjithashtu se Hazar Imam do të bëhet qytetar nderi i Arzachena-s, i njëjti privilegj që iu dha babait të tij në vitin 1965.
La Costa Smeralda u rrit për t’u bërë një destinacion turistik kryesor, me restorante, hotele dhe ambiente sportive, duke iu përmbajtur standardeve të rrepta arkitekturore. Një komitet planifikimi i kryesuar nga Mawlana Shah Karim ndihmoi në zhvillimin e infrastrukturës lokale për të tërhequr vizitorë dhe për të rritur industrinë e kohës së lirë. Ata përcaktuan që ndërtesat e reja duhet të mbahen të ulëta në mënyrë që të përshtaten me peizazhin ekzistues.
“Sot po përurojmë një shesh dhe një skulpturë, por mbi të gjitha po ia besojmë kujtesës kolektive, një emri dhe një vizioni që kanë formësuar thellësisht historinë e Sardenjës bashkëkohore”, tha Alessandra Todde, Presidente e rajonit autonom të Sardenjës. Ajo gjithashtu vuri në dukje ndikimin pozitiv të Imamit të ndjerë përtej arkitekturës bregdetare.
“Trashëgimia e tij përbëhet gjithashtu nga një kulturë sipërmarrjeje, inovacioni, investimesh, punësimi dhe besimi në potencialin e ishullit tonë. Është një trashëgimi që ka përfshirë breza të tërë punëtorësh, sipërmarrësish, profesionistësh dhe të rinjsh që kanë gjetur mundësi të reja falë këtij vizioni.”
Gjatë viteve, rajoni ka vazhduar të jetë pionier në mënyra të qëndrueshme për t’u rritur, duke kaluar në energji të rinovueshme, duke eliminuar plastikën njëpërdorimëshe dhe duke instaluar stacione riciklimi. Gjithashtu, ka eksperimentuar me zgjidhje për ndotjen e detit dhe ka ndihmuar në rritjen e ndërgjegjësimit për sfidat me të cilat përballet jeta detare. Projekti konsiderohet si shembulli i parë i zhvillimit të turizmit të ndërgjegjshëm për mjedisin në Mesdhe.
Në mbyllje, Hazar Imam shprehu mirënjohje për zyrtarët vendas, artistët dhe të gjithë ata që e kanë ruajtur kujtimin e babait të tij me kaq ngrohtësi.
“Ai do të ishte prekur thellësisht nga ky nder. E di që ai gjithashtu do të kishte dashur që ky moment të kishte të bënte me të ardhmen: duke u kujdesur për këtë vend me të njëjtën imagjinatë, disiplinë dhe ndjenjë kujdesi që frymëzoi krijimin e tij.”

At a ceremony in Porto Cervo yesterday evening, local officials formally named the piazza, or town square, in honour of Mawlana Shah Karim. A commemorative sculpture was also unveiled to acknowledge his pioneering work to develop the surrounding area in Sardinia into a thriving coastal region.
Mawlana Hazar Imam was in attendance along with Prince Amyn and Princes Irfan and Sinan. In his remarks, which he delivered partly in Italian, Hazar Imam thanked local officials for the posthumous honour bestowed upon his father.
“A piazza is a place of meeting, memory, and community,” he said. “To associate my father’s name with this one places his memory within Porto Cervo — among the people, the architecture, the landscape and the sea he loved so deeply. My family and I are profoundly grateful for this moving tribute.”
When the late Imam first visited in the early 1960s, the region of Monti di Mola in Sardinia was a barren landscape with no roads or electricity. With his support and guidance, it was transformed into La Costa Smeralda — the Emerald Coast — using local materials while preserving its natural heritage.
The project, Hazar Imam explained, “allowed him to bring together many of the things he cared about deeply: architecture, craftsmanship, landscape, beauty and long-term development.”
Arzachena Mayor Roberto Ragnedda recalled the late Imam’s first visit to the region and his promotion of an architectural approach designed to blend into the landscape rather than dominate it.
“Prince Karim,” he said, “began to love it and to see a prosperous and sustainable future for this corner of land — a future far removed from factories, industry, and the exploitation of raw materials. [He] had the foresight to understand that local identity and natural heritage could become the foundations of shared development.”
“The naming of this square and the unveiling of the commemorative sculpture are, therefore, acts of sincere gratitude.” The work of art, he added, “reflects the philosophy of the Founder. It does not impose itself in a monumental sense, but rather converses with the place.”
Mayor Ragnedda also announced that Hazar Imam is to be granted honorary citizenship of Arzachena, the same privilege bestowed on his father in 1965.
La Costa Smeralda grew to become a premier tourist destination, with restaurants, hotels, and sporting facilities, all while adhering to strict architectural standards. A planning committee chaired by Mawlana Shah Karim helped develop the local infrastructure to attract visitors and uplift the leisure industry. They stipulated that new buildings should be kept low so as to blend into the existing landscape.
“Today we are inaugurating a plaza and a sculpture, but above all we are entrusting to the collective memory, a name and a vision that have profoundly shaped the history of contemporary Sardinia,” said Alessandra Todde, President of the autonomous region of Sardinia. She also noted the late Imam’s positive influence beyond the coastal architecture.
“His legacy also consists of a culture of entrepreneurship, innovation, investment, employment, and confidence in the potential of our island. It is a legacy that has involved entire generations of workers, entrepreneurs, professionals, and young people who have found new opportunities thanks to that vision.”
Over the years, the region has continued to pioneer sustainable ways to grow, switching to renewable energy, eliminating single-use plastics, and installing recycling stations. It has also experimented with solutions to sea pollution and helped to raise awareness of the challenges facing marine life. The project is well-regarded as the first example of environmentally conscious tourism development in the Mediterranean.
In closing, Hazar Imam expressed gratitude to the local officials, artists, and all those who have kept his father’s memory with such warmth.
“He would have been deeply moved by this honour. I know he would also have wanted this moment to be about the future: caring for this place with the same imagination, discipline, and sense of stewardship that inspired its creation.”
